Cordia History

Mitsubishi Cordias were first imported to the United States in late 1982.  The 83 model was the first year.  This was also the first year for all Mitsubishi models to be import to the USA.  Up until this point, Mitsu only imported a few cars for Chrysler like the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Challenger.

Cordias had two models.  The L model was the non-turbo 2.0L Mitsu engine, or 4G63.  This was carburated and put out a whapping 88hp.  The Turbo model used a 1.8L Mitsu engine, or 4g62.  This engine utilized throttle body fuel injection and puts out 116hp with 7psi of boost.  There was also a four door version of this same platform called the Tredia.  The Tredias are even more rare in the USA, but they shared the same engine choices as the Cordia.

The Cordia recevied a few cosmetic upgrades over the year.   In 1984 a single headlight and restyled front grill was used.  In the 87 and 88 models, ground effects were used to improve the looks of this boxy Mitsu coupe.    The Cordia also had a bigger brother called the Starion and Chrysler Conquest.  These cars were faster and had more luxury options.

The Cordia was discontinued in 1988.  Mitsubishi had a replacement for the Cordia and Starion in the works.  In the early 90s, the Eclipse and 3000GT were released to replace there older, boxy decendents.
